Printing, color calibration, paper selection, & framing

 

Starting point: Understand why photographers need color management, and an open mind to the world of paper.

Ending point: attendees will be able to use color management principles more effectively and better identify what papers to print with and why.

Food Photography for Marketing - Quinn Curtis

What Makes an Image Delicious Enough to Sell the Food Behind It (FYI just a pretty pic won't cut it)

 

Starting point: Attendees should be able to take photographs using their digital cameras (DSLR or point-and-shoot), fully aware of how to adjust and customize functions (i.e. ISO, White Balance). At least a basic understanding of photo-editing software such as Photoshop Elements/Photoshop.

Ending point: identify and know better how to achieve elements found in quality food photography, especially to be used for marketing purposes.

Getting Started with HDR - dav.d daniels
How can I create realistic High Dynamic Range (HDR) photographs? What are the steps from capturing photographs to editing them on the computer. What are the pitfalls that can screw things up? And how can I make HDR photos that rock?

 

Starting point: know how bracketing works on their respective cameras. Attendees should be able to use a tripod. Attendees should have a basic understanding of levels, saturation and other photo editing techniques.

Ending point: After the workshop attendees will be able to implement an HDR workflow that begins with properly bracketed photographs. They will know how to use Photomatix Pro to create a tone mapped photograph. Finally, they will know how to edit the tone map photograph using Lightroom or other photo editing program of their choice.

The Art of Modifying Light - Danette Holley
Learn how to use light modifying techniques and see side-by-side examples of the results using each. We will be discussing softboxes, umbrellas (reflective and bounce), ring lights, beauty dishes, snoots, and grids: Plus a few creative and inexpensive ways to create these sources without breaking the bank.

Putting together a successful fashion shoot collaboration team

 

Starting points: Attendees possessing a sense of fantasy, who enjoy creating stories with other artists, and who fancy big productions will get the most out of this presentation. I'll cover aesthetics and production logistics; technical info will be very minimal.

Ending points:Participants will leave the workshop with resources which will enable them to more easily assemble and work with a production team on a conceptual shoot.

The Magical Color Engine - Robert Marc

Explore how film, digital sensors, human eyes process color in different ways and the implications for photographers.

 

Starting point: A beginner's background in the concepts of pixels, filters and Photoshop.

Ending point: Attendees will be able to make choices about color composition with an awareness of the power of scene context, imaging technology and biological variation in generating perception.

 

Robert Marc is Director of Research for the Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah and began his career in vision research before Intel released the first microprocessor. He published the first map of color-coding photoreceptors in the eye while Elvis was still alive and currently heads the one of the world's largest computational neuroimaging programs.

Photoshop's Channels and Masks - Diane Pebley

We will explore the affects color spaces have upon channels, develop various ways to use channels in basic photo processing, and build fast accurate masks without fringing.

 

Starting point: An understanding of various selection tools in your photo editng software arsenal.

Ending point: Understand the relationship color spaces/models have upon channels and be able to move through them with confidence, use channels to build masks and save complex masks, finally use masks in creative processing techniques.

 

This class is designed to introduce channels and masks to the aspiring artistic photographer.

Get your flash off the camera and learn to obtain studio-quality lighting from using little more than your speedlights. Learn about the Strobist approach and non-budget breaking methods to get big results from small lights.

 

Starting Point: Attendees should have a general knowledge of their camera and be comfortable with the basics elements of obtaining a proper exposure i.e. Apeture, Shutter, ISO, etc.
Ending Point: Attendees will have learned the pros and cons of using speedlights compared to monolights and strobes for both on location and studio environments.

Photoshop Demonstration - Nicole Young

Nicole will givie a live Photoshop presentation on doing composites and "advanced" material in Photoshop CS4. Items covered will be layers, blending modes, masking, color/tonal adjustments, and a few other techniques.

 

Starting point: Have a basic understanding of Photoshop, but any level of experience will benefit from my workshop.

Ending point: Apply some new creative techniques in their Photoshop workflow.

On-location Photography: from scouting great locations to delivering results with BIG light techniques
- Kevin Winzeler

This class will focus on what it takes to achieve stellar imagery on-location. We will review two location based "BIG light" shoots and the resulting imagery as well as discuss why sometimes speed lights just won't cut it and when to pull out the BIG lights.

 

Starting point: Please come with a basic understanding of the technical side of working with off-camera lights (i.e. Camera aperture controls power, shutter controls ambient, what the max sync speed of your camera is, etc.). A love for the outdoors and location based work is a bonus.

Ending point: Getting past the technical stuff and finding greater vision when shooting on location including the use of big lights.

Storytelling Panel
Panel members will discuss how they record events and how to tell a story that pulls you in. Relating the people, places, events and circumstance is an element intimately tied to photography. How to craft the story and how to piece together photographic elements that relate the story is what this session will be about.

Starting Point: No prerequisites. This program is for anyone that is interested in using the camera to document and tell stories.
Ending point: Attendees will learn how to establish a story within the context of photography.

This session will cover the basics, the need-to-knows of how to use the Hybrid DSLR in the video mode. We will talk about the tools of storytelling along with the tools of the trade to make your videos more professional.
